Opening of the Sir Miles Davis Academy



Opening Ceremonies 8-25-08





The ribbon cutting opening of the new Sir Miles Davis Magnet Academy in Chicago was an exciting event celebrating the legacy of trumpeter, Miles Davis with live musical performances, a presentation to the Miles Davis family and a inaugural tour othe new building by parents and the community.
According to principal, Maxine Toliver, the school is a math and science magnet cluster which focuses on engineering themes for each grade level, pre-k to 8th grade. It is the first children's engineering school in the state of Illinois .



The celebration focused on the cultural significance of the new school and innovative trumpeter, Miles Davis and his legacy of music. The event was attended by students, parents, teachers, members of the Miles Davis Family, his alumni band members from the Chicago School of Cool and local diginitaries and celebrities and musicians.


Family members included producer/musician, Erin Davis, son of Miles Davis, daughter, Cheryl Davis, Vince Wilburn Sr. and Nef drum Productions CEO, alumni band member and nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr.
Miles Davis band alumni in attendance included bassist, Daryl Jones (Rolling Stones), drummer and nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr., bassist, Keyboardist, Bobby Irving III and a live performance by a longtime Miles Davis sideman, guitarist, Pete Cosey.
